One subject matter I have become more and more interested in is names and numbers. What I mean by this is how strange I find it we give some animals names and some animals numbers depending on their material worth to us. Our pets gain names like us, because they are members of the family and friends. Yet, animals that are portrayed as only serving a purpose with their by products as commodities we treat them as just that and so do not give them names but instead numbers. This is because when we give a name to something we care about it, and if we care about it we create a relationship, give the animal a personality and a soul. I am wanting to name my final product to give the object a soul and a reminder of it's original origin.
I found a forum where a user had asked if anyone else names their inanimate objects as they had over time, so I decided to collect them in a similar format to Donald Norman at the end of Why we love (or hate) everyday things with peoples archetypes:
Lots of people give human names not just to their pets, but to the objects they own.
As can be seen, the majority of names are not given to random objects. They often objects they use on a daily basis, such as a car or instrument, that they have formed a relationship with or an object that has a personal history to them. Famous cases such as Anne Frank named her diary Kitty because she comfined in it as if it was her friend. We have a special bond to some objects that makes us want to seperate them from the rest and make it individual to them. Each of these objects has a story, which is why it has gained a name, and so if I want to present the animals story and educate users to make the connection between animal and by-product, then naming it may be the perfect way to do so.
