One of the key elements to our toy would involve evoking memories and create a feeling of nostalgia for the adult using it. The other element was a creating some sort of anticipation of an action that would provide satisfaction. It was then we remembered the humble spinning top.
Charles and Ray Eames created a beautiful film at the end of the 1960's depicting different sorts of spinning tops from an array of cultures and times. This signified to us that the spinning top is a widely know and greatly loved toy that is an example of independent challenge as the user attempts to create a perfect spin. Not only does it provide the nostalgia element we wished for, but also the antipaction as the user waits to see if the spin is successful and the satisfaction from seeing the top spin.
Spirals are seen all around us, in art, arcuteture and most unseen, within nature. We see a lot of Fibonacci's spiral in our natural world creativing visually breath-taking creatures. It could be that the satisfaction to spirals, unison, repition and spinning is hard wired into us. We want to play on this pleasure.
In keeping with the nostalgia theme, we want to keep all elements of the product an authentic feel. Using simple yet visually stimulating packaging will product even more pleasure in using the product.
